Medicare Scooters

Medicare Mobility ScootersIf you have Medicare you may be eligible for a mobility scooter at little to not cost!

The first thing you need to do is visit your doctor for assessment. Your doctor will then provide documentation stating your need for a scooter. This information can then be sent to your DME or mobility scooter supplier who will direct you on the next steps. They will probably ask you four questions:

1. Do you have a mobility limitation that prevents you from participating in daily living activities, including bathing, feeding, and dressing?

2. Are you unable to use a walker, cane, or manual wheelchair to accomplish the daily living activities that you are currently not able to perform?

3. Are you able to safely operate and transfer to and from a mobility scooter?

4. Can you safely operate a scooter iside your home?

If you answered yes to all four questions, then you may be eligible.

The next step is to determine which scooter is right for you. You can choose from travel scooters, 3 wheel scooters, 4 wheel scooters, and heavy duty scooters. You can read more about these scooter types here.

What will Medicare cover?

Assuming you choose a scooter that is Medicare Eligible, Medicare will typically cover 80% of the allowable amount, which can vary from state to state. Please visit the official Medicare site for more information.

If you shop for a Medicare eligible scooter online at a store like SpinLife, you may realize that the prices for most of their scooters are already below the allowable amount, meaning your out of pocket cost would be 20% of the price listed on the site.

Secondary Insurance

If you have secondary insurance they may cover the remaining 20% of the cost. This means you get the scooter a little to no cost! Please check with SpinLife or you DME to determine your actual coverage.
